DIY: Natural Sports Drink Recipe

sugary_sports_drinks

Sport drinks are an excellent way to provide athletes of all ages with important electrolytes lost during exercise.  They are also a good fluid replacement option when you’re sick and need to hydrate and replace calories. By making your own sport drinks you avoid the high sugar, high sodium, artificial color and chemical ingredients of store bought versions. Gatorade recently came under scrutiny for including an ingredient linked to flame retardant. Our kids deserve better than that!

The recipes below provide antioxidants, vitamins and nutrition of natural juices in a rapidly absorbed formula.

Lemon Flavor Natural Sports Drink:

  • 1/4 c. honey
  • 1/2 c. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 t. sea salt
  • 2 quarts water

Mix well.  Makes a little over 2 quarts.

Cranberry-Pomegranate Flavor Natural Sports Drink:

  • 2 c. 100% juice cranberry-pomegranate juice
  • 1.5 individual packets of Stevia (or to taste)
  • 1/4 t. sea salt
  • 2 quarts water

Mix well.   Makes 2 1/2 quarts.

Also coconut water is a super nourishing sports drink on its own or mixed with juice. Do you make your own sport drinks or have a favorite natural version you buy? Please share in the comments below!

Ill or well, I’ve never been able to stomach sports drinks. I find the taste almost as bad as the illness I am trying to aid.  Good to know that there are healthy (homemade) alternatives. Thanks for sharing!

Easiest one we use is just a 50/50 mix of water and OJ (orange juice) with a pinch of salt. Sometimes the OJ even has the calcium added but this gives you all the hydration plus many of the electrolytes from the sports drinks but are naturally occurring. natural cleaning products.
