Natural Products for a Happy, Healthy Baby

{Today’s guest post is by Dayna Schaef }

 I gave birth to my first baby, a healthy 9lb boy with golden hair, almost a year ago and since becoming a mother, I have slowly evolved my daily practices to include some more natural, green solutions and the process has brought me to some pleasant and welcome changes. There is nothing like bringing home a newborn baby to open your eyes to the products that you fill your house with; products with chemicals and toxins and mysterious ingredients. I started paying closer attention, and what I found was pretty alarming.

I used to buy my clothes and cleaning products and home accessories from a superstore and it never once occurred to me to inquire into the ingredients that went into the laundry detergent I was using or the toothpaste that I brushed my teeth with. After I became a mother, suddenly I cared a great deal about what I would be exposing my little one to, so I did some research and I read a lot and slowly started to change the way I filled my cart. I began reading the ingredients of everything I bought, and reading up on the companies from which I purchased my sons clothing and toys and medicines and even his little, baby mattress. And now, our house is filled with some really great, natural baby products and I’ll never look back.

 Check out this list of my top 5 favorite natural products for your wee one:

1. BumGenius Elemental One-Size Organic Cloth Diaper- I was nervous to try cloth diapering, but Bumgenius makes it super easy and smart to move away from disposable diapers. Their One-Size-Fits-All diaper means that these bummies will follow your little one all the way through potty training and you won’t have to worry about exposing them to the harsh chemicals and chlorine in standard disposable diapers. Stock up on Bumgenius’ here.

2. Hyland’s Baby Teething Gel- This is the only teething gel that I felt comfortable giving to my baby, because it’s homeopathic and safe and has never contain Benzocaine—the strong numbing medicine in other products. Plus, it works great! I noticed that my son calmed down instantly as soon as I applied the safe and soothing gel directly to his gums. Hyland’s has a ton of great natural baby remedies for common complaints like earaches, coughs, colds and flu. Shop Hyland’s Baby.

3. Aden + Anais Natural Muslin Swaddling Blankets- Swaddling can be difficult but most new moms and dads will agree that it can be a real life saver when your newborn is on a sleep strike. We loved the Aden + Anais Natural Muslin Swaddling Blankets because they were cool, soft and a bit stretchy so they made a difficult task- wrapping a wiggly, crying baby- a lot less stressful. And now that my son is almost a year old, he loves to cuddle with the blankets at bedtime. Read about Muslin and get your baby a set of blankies, here

4. Moby Wrap- Baby wearing is one of the quickest ways to bond with your new baby and there are a ton of wraps on the market. The Moby Wrap comes in 100% organic material and in my opinion, is one of the most comfortable and natural ways to cart your little one around.

5. MotherLove Diaper Rash & Thrush Balm- This stuff is actually miracle balm. The second I see any sign of skin irritation anywhere on my baby’s body, not just his diaper zone, I apply a little of this all-natural balm and the rash or irritation is cleared up with the hour. The company also makes great products for nursing mamas, too. Check out all of their natural products here

  1. It’s ironic that the more ‘sophisticated’ we get the more we realize that we need to eat natural foods and use eco friendly products.
